Bangladesh has embarked on a new path as it qualifies for graduation to the status of a developing nation and is set to formally attain the designation of a developing country in the year 2026. The Honorable Prime Minister, H. E. Sheikh Hasina, has unveiled a master plan to guide Bangladesh toward its next phase, known as ‘Smart Bangladesh’. This initiative is designed to lead the country towards becoming a technologically advanced and environmentally sustainable nation. Expanding upon the groundwork laid by the Digital Bangladesh initiative, Smart Bangladesh envisions the establishment of smart cities, smart agriculture, smart healthcare, smart education, smart energy, smart governance, and smart institutions. The overarching objective is to forge a future for the people of Bangladesh that is more prosperous, equitable, and sustainable. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Father of the Nation, underscored the pivotal role of science and technology in propelling the newly independent Bangladesh forward. Consequently, the Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR) was founded in 1973, following the issuance of Cabinet Resolution No. 1(24)/73-BCSIR, dated November 16, 1973. BCSIR, the apex research organization of the country, takes great pride in hosting the 'BCSIR Congress-2023'. This event is specifically centered on the theme of 'Smart Bangladesh and Science and Technology (S&T)' to commemorate the organization's 50-year journey since its establishment in independent Bangladesh.
